Barbell plates are an indispensable part of fitness equipment and can be classified into various types based on different standards and characteristics. Here is an introduction to the classification based on material:
Cast iron barbell plates. This is the most common type, with good durability and weight. The surface is treated to have good anti-slip performance, but the appearance is relatively simple. This type of barbell plate is usually used for general fitness and weight training.
Rubber barbell plates. This type of barbell plate is coated with a layer of rubber on the basis of cast iron plates, aiming to reduce noise and protect the floor. The addition of rubber material also makes the handle softer, suitable for home gyms.
Urethane-coated barbell plates. The inner layer is mostly iron, and the outer layer is covered with rubber of different thicknesses, mainly used to reduce noise and protect the ground.
PU barbell plates. The inner layer is cast iron or steel plate, and the outer layer is poured with PU (polyurethane). This type of barbell plate has good wear resistance, high-end appearance, and is not easy to age.
Cement or sand-filled barbell plates. This type of barbell plate is heavier and is mainly used for special training or as a tool for fixed weight exercises.
In addition, barbell plates can also be classified into multiple types based on weight and color. Common weights include 1.25kg, 2.5kg, 5kg, 10kg, 15kg, 20kg, and 25kg, and the color usually represents different weight classes. In weightlifting competitions, special weightlifting plates for competitions are also used, including flange plates, color film plates, and full rubber plates. Each type of barbell plate has its own characteristics and applicable scenarios, and the choice should be based on individual needs and training environment.
